Get ready for a game-changer in the skies! Air China Cargo’s bold move to embrace the future of air freight is about to revolutionize their operations.
In a groundbreaking decision, Air China Cargo has signed a deal to acquire six Airbus A350F freighters, becoming the first customer in mainland China to do so. This move is a significant step towards modernizing their cargo fleet and enhancing operational efficiency.
Wang Hongyan, Vice President of Air China Cargo, highlighted the benefits, stating, “The A350F will not only improve our operational and maintenance efficiency but also strengthen our ability to navigate long-term operational risks.”
But here’s where it gets controversial…
Airbus’s Benoît de Saint-Exupéry, EVP Sales of Commercial Aircraft, praised the decision, emphasizing the A350F’s next-generation efficiency, performance, and capacity. However, some industry experts argue that while the A350F is an impressive aircraft, it may not be the only solution for Air China Cargo’s needs.
Air China Cargo, a national flag carrier based in Beijing, has been expanding its reach since June 2025, operating cargo flights across China and establishing routes to key regions worldwide. Their dedicated freighter network, complemented by global ground trucking routes, positions them as a key player in the global air cargo market.
The A350F, designed as the world’s most advanced freighter, is tailored to meet the diverse needs of the air cargo industry. With a capacity of up to 111 tonnes and a range of 8,700 km, it’s powered by Rolls-Royce Trent XWB-97 engines, offering significant fuel and emission reductions.
What sets the A350F apart is its use of advanced materials, resulting in a lighter aircraft with the industry’s largest main deck cargo door. It’s also future-proof, meeting ICAO’s 2027 CO₂ standards and aiming for 100% SAF capability by 2030.
As of October 2025, the A350 Family had garnered significant interest, with 1,445 orders from 63 customers worldwide, including 74 orders for the A350F from 12 customers.
So, is Air China Cargo’s decision to adopt the A350F a strategic masterstroke or a risky move? We want to hear your thoughts! Join the discussion in the comments and share your insights on this exciting development in the world of air freight.
