NUP Leaders Mobilize in Masaka to Support Kuteesa’s Campaign Against Bwanika
After an intense five-day campaign, Joel Ssenyonyi, an opposition leader in Parliament, and Muwanga Kivumbi, the Buganda regional head of the National Unity Platform (NUP), visited Masaka on Wednesday to rally support for Patrick Kuteesa. Kuteesa, the NUP candidate, aims to challenge Dr. Abed Bwanika, representing the Democratic Front, in the Kimaanya-Kabonera constituency.
NUP leaders in Masaka City have shown their backing for Kuteesa, who launched his campaign in Kyabakuza, vowing to reclaim the constituency for the party. Party officials stressed the importance of every NUP candidate’s hard work to secure dominance in the region.
Florence Namayanja, the Mayor of Masaka City, revealed that her office has initiated an investigation into Dr. Bwanika’s spending of public funds, as chair of the city’s Roads Committee. She noted inconsistencies and questionable expenditures of taxpayer money, emphasizing the need for accountability.
Kuteesa, self-proclaimed as ‘the liberator,’ joined the race due to his concern for the persistent challenges faced by residents, particularly the lack of clean water. He expressed distress over the continued lack of safe drinking water in Masaka, stating that he cannot remain passive in the face of such prolonged issues.
In a speech to supporters in Masaka, Ssenyonyi addressed critics who accuse some opposition members of undermining the struggle for change. He emphasized the importance of speaking out against wrongdoing, regardless of who commits it, and urged residents to carefully choose their leaders in the current political climate.
Ssenyonyi also highlighted the plight of political prisoners, including Eddie Mutwe, Grace Wakabi, and Achileo Kivumbi, urging the audience to reflect on these cases when deciding on their leaders. Muwanga Kivumbi, the NUP’s Buganda chairperson, called for resilience and courage among Ugandans seeking political change, emphasizing the delicate nature of the country’s political landscape ahead of the 2026 elections.
