Morgan Freeman, the legendary actor, has a strong stance on the use of his voice and likeness in artificial intelligence (AI) recreations. In a recent interview, he expressed his frustration with AI imitators, stating, ‘You’re robbing me.’
Freeman, known for his iconic roles in films like ‘The Dark Knight’ and ‘The Shawshank Redemption’, is not taking kindly to the growing trend of AI-generated voices and avatars that mimic his unique style. As his peers, such as Michael Caine, embrace AI technology to preserve their voices, Freeman is taking a different approach.
When asked about the idea of retirement, Freeman revealed that his legal team has been busy dealing with numerous cases related to AI imitators. He believes that using his voice and likeness without his consent is not only unethical but also a form of theft. ‘I’m a little PO’d,’ he said, ‘I don’t appreciate it, and I get paid for doing stuff like that. So, if you’re gonna do it without me, you’re robbing me.’
Despite the controversy, Freeman remains committed to his craft. He admitted that the idea of retirement had crossed his mind, but his passion for acting keeps him engaged. ‘Sometimes the idea of retirement would float past me,’ he shared, ‘but as soon as my agent says there’s a job or somebody wants you or they’ve made an offer, the whole thing just boils back into where it was yesterday: how much you’re going to pay, where we’re gonna be?’
Freeman’s comments shed light on the complex relationship between artists and AI technology. While some see AI as a tool for preservation and creativity, others view it as a threat to their work and identity. Freeman’s stance raises important questions about the ethical use of AI in the entertainment industry and the potential impact on the livelihoods of actors and artists.
