Can AI Detect Lies? Exploring the Science Behind Deception Detection (2025)

This research, featured in the Journal of Communication, involved a massive undertaking: 12 experiments drawing in more than 19,000 AI participants. Scientists from MSU and the University of Oklahoma teamed up to pit AI against real human subjects, testing the technology's knack for distinguishing between lies and honest statements. As David Markowitz, an associate professor of communication at MSU's College of Communication Arts and Sciences and the study's lead author, explains, the goal was twofold: to gauge AI's potential as a tool for lie detection and to simulate human behavior in social science studies, while also warning experts about the pitfalls of relying on large language models for such tasks.

To make sense of how AI stacks up against us humans, the researchers turned to a concept called Truth–Default Theory, or TDT for short. This idea, which they've borrowed to compare AI's behavior with ours, posits that most people are honest most of the time, and we're naturally wired to assume others are telling the truth. Think about it: In everyday life, constantly questioning everyone's sincerity would be exhausting and could ruin friendships or simple conversations. Evolutionarily, this "truth bias" makes sense – it's a mental shortcut that keeps social interactions smooth and efficient. Markowitz puts it this way: "Humans have a natural truth bias—we generally assume others are being honest, regardless of whether they actually are. This tendency is thought to be evolutionarily useful, since constantly doubting everyone would take much effort, make everyday life difficult, and be a strain on relationships."

The experiments themselves were meticulously designed to test AI's judgment under various conditions. Using the Viewpoints AI research platform, the team fed the AI judges audiovisual or audio-only clips of people making statements, asking the AI to decide if the speaker was lying or being truthful and to explain its reasoning. They tweaked several factors to see what influenced accuracy, including the type of media (full video with sound versus just audio), the background context (like details that explain the situation), the balance of lies versus truths in the samples (called lie-truth base-rates), and even the "persona" of the AI – essentially, customized identities that make the AI behave and respond more like a real person.

One fascinating example from the study really illustrates the AI's quirks: When tasked with evaluating statements, the AI proved far better at catching lies (hitting an 85.8% accuracy rate) than truths (a mere 19.5%). In quick, interrogation-style scenarios – like questioning suspects – AI's lie-spotting skills were on par with human performance. But in more casual settings, such as judging comments about friends, the AI showed a truth bias, mirroring how people often default to believing honesty. Overall, the results painted a clear picture: AI tends to be "lie-biased," meaning it's overly suspicious, and it falls short of human accuracy in most cases.

And this is the part most people miss – the deeper insights into AI's limitations. "Our main goal was to see what we could learn about AI by including it as a participant in deception detection experiments," Markowitz notes. "In this study, and with the model we used, AI turned out to be sensitive to context—but that didn't make it better at spotting lies." The key takeaway? AI's performance doesn't align with human intuition or precision, suggesting that something uniquely "human" acts as a boundary for these deception theories. While AI might seem like an objective, impartial judge – free from emotions or biases – the study cautions that the field needs huge leaps forward before generative AI can be confidently used for lie detection.

It's easy to get excited about the possibilities, right? Picture AI in courtrooms or job interviews, acting as an unbiased lie detector. But here's the controversy: Could relying on AI actually lead to unfair judgments, especially if it's prone to errors or biases we don't fully understand?
